Rays Salvage Finale From Tigers

The Tampa Bay Rays (13-13) defeated the Detroit Tigers (14-11) 7-5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. The win avoids a sweep for Tampa Bay in the finale of the three-game series.

Randy Arozarena started the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the first that tied the game. The Rays then took a 4-1 lead in the second thanks to RBI hits from Ben Rortvedt, Jose Caballero and Yandy Diaz.

Detroit answered with two in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. The Rays had another answer, though, when Rortvedt tied the game with a RBI hit in the bottom of the sixth. Then Curtis Mead hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth that would prove to be the difference in this game.

The Rays are now off on Thursday before heading to Chicago to play the White Sox for a three-game series this weekend beginning on Friday night. Zach Eflin is scheduled to start Friday for the Rays, opposed by Chris Flexen. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:40 PM - pregame coverage begins with the Inside Pitch at 6:30 on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
