A Nuclear Power Plant Accidentally Told a Whole Town to Evacuate

A bunch of people were at a beach in Seabrook, New Hampshire on Tuesday when they heard an alert telling them to evacuate . . . because something had gone wrong at a NUCLEAR POWER PLANT nearby. The alert said, "Attention. There is a problem at Seabrook Nuclear Power Station." And it told them to leave the area immediately.  (Seabrook is right on the border with Massachusetts, about 40 miles north of Boston. Thankfully, it was a mistake, and no one was in any real danger. But people panicked and started running off the beach. It turned out workers at the plant were testing the emergency system, and accidentally played the alert on nine of the 121 sirens around the area. They sent a second alert out to people's phones as soon as they could to let them know everything was okay, and they didn't need to evacuate. The New Hampshire Department of Safety put out a statement yesterday. They said they're conducting a "comprehensive review" of what went wrong.
